Cholar Dal With Luchi: Bengal’s Traditional Breakfast Combo

Ingredients of Luchi

  • 1 Cup maida
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • 1/2 cup water

How to make Luchi

Step 1: In a deep bowl mix all purpose flour (maida), salt, ghee & water to prepare a soft dough. Add water as required for kneading the flour.
Step 2: Divide the dough into equal small portions and make balls to roll it out.
Step 3: Before rolling each ball dip it a little in water or oil from one side to avoid stickening.
Step 4: Now roll each ball into a equal size circle.
Step 5: Heat Purti sunflower oil in kadhai on high flame.
Step 6: When the oil is perfectly hot, slide the Luchi in the hot oil for frying it. Luchi is begin to puff up & Cook on both the sides.
Step 7: Drain it on the paper towels to remove the excess oil.

Ingredients of Cholar Daal

  • 1 Cup chana Dal
  • 1/2 cup coconut, chopped
  • 1 sticks cinnamon
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 1 Clove
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • A pinch of sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups water

For Tadka

  • Purti sunflower oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 Bay leaves
  • 2 Cloves
  • 1 Cinnamon sticks
  • 4 Cardamom
  • 2 Whole red chilli

How to make Cholar Dal

Step 1: Soak a cup of chana dal for about ten minutes.
Step 2: Take Purti sunflower oil in a pan and add chopped coconut to it.
Step 3: Pan fry coconut till golden brown.
Step 4: Take soaked chana dal in a pressure cooker.
Step 5: Add cinnamon, clove, bay leaf, raisins, fried coconut, turmeric, salt and sugar to the cooker.
Step 6: Mix thoroughly and add water. Pressure cook it.

Prepare Tadka:

Step 1: Take Purti sunflower oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom and red chilli whole.
Step 2: Saute them thoroughly with the ghee.
Step 3: Pour it over the cooked dal in the pressure cooker. Mix well.
Step 4: Serve the Bengali Style Chana Dal hot with garnishing of chopped and fried coconut.
